Definition

Note: The auto:nsfl tag is automatically applied by the system when any tag from the NSFL category is present on a post. It serves as a content warning and filtering flag rather than a manually applied tag.

Definition

NSFL is an acronym commonly understood as "Not Safe For Life." On this site, it identifies content that requires a heightened content warning and filtering boundary beyond the standard NSFW classification.

NSFL is not defined solely by sexual explicitness, severity, or how objectionable a subject may be to an individual user. NSFL classification may serve several purposes depending on the subject, including:

  • Unexpected exposure: Content that a significant number of users may reasonably wish to avoid encountering unexpectedly.
  • Platform health: Content where the subject matter or visual depiction within images requires additional moderation, classification, or filtering to maintain appropriate platform standards.
  • Content sensitivity: Content that is sufficiently contentious, disturbing, or otherwise sensitive that exposing it without an explicit NSFL opt-in could create significant concerns.

A tag does not need to satisfy every consideration equally to belong to the NSFL category. Different NSFL tags may serve different purposes, and their inclusion should be evaluated according to the nature of the specific content they describe.

NSFL tags should generally identify a specific sensitive subject or an explicit severity qualifier rather than broadly classifying an otherwise ordinary concept merely because it can sometimes occur in extreme contexts.

Usage

The auto:nsfl tag is automatically applied to any post that contains one or more tags from the NSFL category. Users browsing the site will not see posts tagged with auto:nsfl unless they have explicitly opted in to NSFL content through their profile settings.

The auto:nsfl tag itself cannot be manually added or removed by users. It functions as a system-level content filtering flag.

Posts containing auto:nsfl remain hidden from search results and browsing for users who have not enabled NSFL content in their profile settings.

Individual NSFL tags should still be applied according to their own definitions. The presence of a broad or potentially sensitive concept does not automatically make a post NSFL unless the relevant NSFL tag or another applicable classification is warranted.

Moderation & Image Safety

NSFL classification applies to both the card's textual content and its associated media. Tagging should therefore reflect the content actually presented by the post rather than relying solely on the scenario described by the card.

Images must be consistent with the classification of the post. A card that is otherwise appropriately categorized can still require NSFL classification when its image explicitly depicts NSFL-sensitive material.

Sensitive subjects requiring particular attention include, but are not limited to, underage sexualization, extreme violence, zoophilia and other content covered by dedicated NSFL tags.

Where the appropriate classification is uncertain, incomplete, or appears inconsistent between the card and its image, the content should be reviewed or reported so that staff can determine the appropriate classification.

This ensures that NSFL filtering functions as both a user-facing content warning and a platform-level safety classification, rather than relying solely on the presence of particular words or descriptions in a card.
