Tsundere is a character archetype originating from Japanese media that describes a character who initially exhibits a cold, hostile, or dismissive personality before gradually revealing a warmer, friendlier, and more affectionate side over time. The term is a portmanteau of two Japanese onomatopoeic words: "tsun-tsun," meaning to turn away in disgust or aloofness, and "dere-dere," meaning to become lovestruck or affectionate.
The tsundere archetype is one of the most recognizable and prevalent character types in anime, manga, and related media. The character typically uses harsh words, defensive posturing, or even mild violence to mask their true feelings, which are often feelings of love, embarrassment, or insecurity. The transition between the "tsun" and "dere" phases can be gradual over the course of a story or can flip rapidly within a single scene depending on the character's emotional state.
Usage
Apply this tag to any character who displays the classic tsundere personality pattern of alternating between cold hostility and warm affection. The tag applies regardless of whether the character leans more heavily toward the tsun side or the dere side, as long as both aspects are present in their characterization.
This tag can be combined with other personality and role tags when applicable, such as:
- cute for tsundere characters whose dere side emphasizes endearing or adorable behavior
Do not apply this tag to characters who are permanently cold or aggressive without ever showing a softer side, as the defining trait of a tsundere is the duality between the two contrasting personality states.
