Definition

low_effort is an umbrella term used to describe character creation prompts and definitions that lack proper formatting, optimization, or original input. This broad category encompasses issues ranging from unsanitized raw data dumps (such as unedited wiki pages or raw LLM outputs) to fake optimization techniques and fundamental structural flaws that lead to unstable sessions caused by context decay or a heavy randomized reliance on the AI's base training data.

Staff Note

When applying this tag; you are doing so based on objectivity, not personal opinion.
Do not apply low_effort based on the characters, actions or tags present in the bot just because you happen to dislike the type of content depicted. Misuse of this tag to tag content you personally dislike or to harass other creators will result in penalties against your account. It is intended to be a high confidence tag; meaning if you ask 5 other random people on the site if they think this card is low priority, 4/5 would agree with you without even needing to know the definition of the tag.

Do not apply this tag based on just on minor, co-incidental or slight transgression of the examples below. Do not be pedantic. Generally; use your best judgement to determine and separate out low quality from genuine low effort of the writer.

Usage

Apply this tag to character definitions that exhibit generalized significant, indisputable laziness in their construction, making consistent and high-quality interactions difficult or impossible due to missing anchors, grammatical failures, or artificial token inflation. The category includes diverse technical and structural issues that define the scope of this tag.

When to use:

  • For definitions exhibiting a Lack of Data Origin Sanitation, such as reusing existing information without adaptation, or failing to remove AI conversational filler. Examples include:

    • Copy-paste and Wiki dumps(often leaving behind reference brackets like [2] or [nb 20]): "Son Goku[nb 20] is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball manga series created by Akira Toriyama. He is based on Sun Wukong..."

    • Non reformatted/optimized LLM output: "Here is a character profile of Scholar Archetype generated based on your request: [character details] I hope this character meets your needs! Let me know if you would like any adjustments to his background, abilities, or tone."

  • For prompts relying on Fake optimization, where a lack of detail forces the LLM to hallucinate basic traits, or the creator attempts to rely entirely on the AI's pre-training. Examples include:

    • Lack of detail (missing name, appearance, gender, etc.): "Very obsessed with you, loves teasing you to always get a reaction out of you"

    • Character Summoning (relying purely on LLM fanon/canon data without specifying which.): "{{char}} is Rogue from x-men"

    • Minimalist greetings IF also accompanied alongside minimalist description, scenarios and other permanent token context: "You see {{char}" or "Make your own intro" - The latter whilst some might consider lazy, can be a legitimate introduction to a detailed, open_world scenario if sufficiently fleshed out through a description or lorebook that equips a LLM with the ability to generate a random introduction.

  • For cards with severe Structural Issues, such as rushed content that breaks consistency, grammar failures, or artificial token padding to fool filters. Examples include:

    • Quick and Dirty (in desperate need of spell/grammar/consistency checks): "she is a Indian girl who gose the work with her Business suit, she has a husband who goes the work and always gets her food, but the same as Pannom she gets a belly full to."

    • Intentional token inflation(To pad token count to project legitimacy): "{{char}} is Rogue from x-men. {{char}} is Rogue from x-men. {{char}} is Rogue from x-men. {{char}} is Rogue from x-men"

    • Repetitive prose to a lesser extent (trying to forcefully bias the LLM or bad writing): "{{char}} is so beautiful, people always calls her beautiful, all her friends think she is beautiful. {{char}} is so beautiful she can win beauty contests. {{char}}'s teacher thinks she is beautiful."

    • Field Duplication(Where the same exact entry appears in several fields like Description, Personality and Scenario): "Personality:{REFER TO DESCRIPTION} Scenario:{REFER TO DESCRIPTION}"

When NOT to use:

  • Do not apply this tag to thoroughly detailed, well-formatted, and properly sanitized character definitions, even if the underlying concept is simple or the character archetype is common.
  • Do not apply this tag to characters based on existing intellectual properties if the creator has put in the effort to translate and specify the character's traits into proper personality anchors, custom greetings, and structured formatting rather than simply "summoning" them by name.
  • Do not apply this tag to bad exports (Common in bad JanitorAI/jannyai exports in where Creator notes end up in the Personality or other field) - Instead, notify the uploader to fix the bot instead or staff failing that. Bad exports are not reflective of the effort of the original writer, it should instead be considered a technical problem during upload.
  • Do not apply this tag just because the writer themselves say it's "low effort", what some creators call low effort are in fact more effort than 99% of other creators. Judge the bots based on their own merits.
