dark fantasy

Definition

Dark fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy that combines traditional fantasy elements with horror, grim themes, and mature subject matter. Unlike standard fantasy, dark fantasy typically features morally ambiguous characters, bleak or decaying worlds, and an overall tone of despair or dread. Common elements include graphic violence, corruption, cosmic horror influences, and settings where evil or suffering is pervasive and often triumphant.

The genre often subverts classic fantasy tropes, replacing noble heroes with anti-heroes or doomed protagonists, and magical wonder with dangerous or malevolent supernatural forces. Notable examples in broader media include the Berserk series, Dark Souls, and The Witcher.

Usage

Apply this tag when the character, setting, or scenario clearly falls within the dark fantasy subgenre. This includes characters from established dark fantasy works, original characters designed with dark fantasy aesthetics such as worn armor, Gothic architecture, or corrupted magical appearances, and scenarios involving grim fantasy themes like monster hunting in a dying world or dealing with demonic forces.

Use this tag alongside fantasy when appropriate, though dark_fantasy should be considered the more specific tag and takes priority when the tone and themes are notably grim or horrific. Do not use this tag for standard fantasy settings that simply feature combat or villains without the characteristic bleakness of the subgenre.
